Masura Emoto says that he thinks “music was meant to bring our vibrations back to our intrinsic state” and that before it is art, it is a tool for healing.
Pretty powerful stuff! I have to say that I believe there is some truth to what he says. Have you ever felt the intensity of a mood shift when you hear certain music- both in good ways and in bad? Whether I need a little extra energy for a strenuous workout, some relaxing music that makes me a more creative and better cook, an upbeat tempo to get me ready for a night out, or some soft resonating tones that puts me in a meditative state taking my yoga practice to the next level … music consistently takes me to a certain emotional place that I couldn’t logically convince myself to get to. On the flip side, have you ever turned on the radio to hear a song that reminds you a certain time- a long lost love let’s say, which results in a rush of feelings that totally takes you over? Music’s ability to transport is beyond reason… but is it beyond science?
Dr Emoto, a Japanese scientist, has spent years researching the effects of words and music on water as it freezes into ice crystals. Using distilled water samples, all from the same source the results were astonishing: beautiful words=beautiful crystals, beautiful music=beautiful water crystals, all balanced in intricate shapes. “Hate,” “war,” and other words with negative meanings resulted in frozen ice in molecular disarray.

Next, Dr. Emoto stuck a piece of paper on the testing dishes with these words: “You make me sick. I will kill you.” Here’s how the frozen water droplets looks like under the microscope…
Below is how water looked like with the words “Love” over it. The difference is amazing!

Dr. Emoto’s research has corroborated Einstein’s theory that everything is energy on sub-atomic level, all moving at different speeds. Therefore resonance, through music or spoken word, then has ability to effect our energy. Dr. Emoto reminds us that our bodies are comprised of 72% water. So, if we consistently tell ourselves negative things like “I’m not ____ enough” (fill in the blank) or let people tell us we suck or surround ourselves with those who like to belabor the negative, it would seem to reason that our body chemistry would react on a molecular level. He claims to have healed thousands of sick people through the use of energy and resonance through the power of good and positive thoughts.
Seem weird? Maybe. But if you consider the expected high percentage of pyschosomatic illnesses, perhaps there is something there? The power of mind/body/soul connection is amazing by any calculation and much of it is not even really understood.
His research makes so much sense to me… I buy it. But, I have so many questions that I’d love to ask him. For example, the classical music resulted in beautiful water crystals while heavy metal looked like an oil sludge. But what if the listener really loved heavy metal and profoundly disliked classical music? Would it the reaction be different if the listener had different yet genuine reactions to the music? What if someone loving said “Kill”? Is it a tone that changes the ice crystal formation or the embedded cultural intention, and therefore the energy, that is translated?
Fascinating stuff and I guess we don’t really know the answers. But in the mean time, I will think positive happy thoughts as I cook and garden (nourish the food that nourishes me!) and keep giving myself and others the loving vibes we all deserve! Please do the same!
If you Youtube Masura Emoto you will get so many cool results! Here’s one of my favorites that helps you learn more about the research:
